SIXERS GET TOUGH IN THE END TO CLOSE OUT NUGGETS 124-122

The Sixers are learning to be closers.

Ersan Ilyasova had a career-high 23 points and 13 rebounds and the Sixers survived a flurry in the final seconds to beat the Denver Nuggets 124-122 last night.

“I feel like the trip has been rewarded with a win and us having the ability to finally close out a game and finish off the fourth period,” Philly coach Brett Brown said.

Joel Embiid returned after sitting out Thursday’s loss in Utah to score 23 points and hit key free throws down the stretch. The Sixers ended their four-game trip with just their third win away from home despite having just nine available players.

They had a chance to win the other three games on this trip but consistently faltered in the fourth quarter. The Jazz outscored them 30-9 to end Thursday’s game, and the Sixers went over the tape of the period Friday morning.

“Tonight, that was the emphasis at the end of the third quarter, that’s what everybody was talking al festival in New York. The Manchester City star will speak about football and discrimination and how athletes are using their platforms for activism.Sterling has been an outspoken critic of racism in football after he was racially abused by Chelsea about,” Embiid said. “We focucontract with Chelsea. The 19-year-old defender has put pen to paper on a new deal that will run until at least 2022.”I’m really excited and happy to sign a new contract and extend my stay at the club,” he told the official Chelsea website.”I can now sed, we locked in and got the win.”

Nikola Jokic had a game-high 25 points for the Nuggets, and Emmanuel Mudiay scored 22. Denver had won four of its last five home games but a bad start led to another defeat.

The Nuggets had a chance to tie it during a frantic ending. After Embiid hit two free throws to put the Sixers up four, Jokic was fouled on a 3-point attempt.

Jokic made the first two free throws and intentionally missed the third. I’m Roman, I know everything here, it is my home and I’ve travelled aary Harris grabbed the rebound but missed a short bank shot, andKenneth Faried’s tip-in try was off as time expired.

“Jokic did a great job missing, I got a shot up and we had a chance for a tip-in, but it just didn’t go our way,” Harris said.

Four straight foul shots by Denver tied it, but Embiid split a pair of free throws to put Philadelphia ahead by one.

He then stripped Jokic on the other end as the center went up for a go-ahead layup and drained two more free throws to put the Sixers ahead 120-117 with 15.9 seconds left.

JAHLIL OKAFOR MAY BE AN EX-SIXER BY END OF BUSINESS TODAY!

The Sixers are trying to get a deal done to trade center Jahlil Okafor by tonight.

The Sixers on Saturday acknowledged engaging in trade talks — Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype reported the team informed Okafor that they’ts Napoli can win the Serie A title this season. The defender left Roma for Napoli earlier this month.Manolas said, “II chose Napoli because they’re a team who are close to Juventus and can make a leap in quality,” the defender told Sky Sport Italiave had discussions with the Bulls, Pelicans, Trail Blazers and Nuggets.

The Bulls reportedly talked to the Sixers on Feb. 3, while the Pelicans and Sixers were supposedly discussing a deal in which the Sixers would receive a protected 2018 first-round pick and journeymaMadrid are willing to make a swap offer for Manchester United ace Paul Pogba. The Sun says the French World Cup winner is desperate to quit Old Trafford after giving up on their future league title chances. It is understood the Red Devils are looking fn center Alexis Ajinca for Okafor.

The situation left Brown “conflicted — tremendously conflicted — because you&#son-Odoi can match Eden Hazard’s success at Chelsea.Green played alongside the 18-year-old at Chelsea last season, and saw the youngster left out on a regular basis by Maurizio Sarri.Green told BBC Sport when asked if Hudson-Odoi can match Hazard’s l8217;ve spent a lot of time with these guys and they’re very young.”

“You’re trying to coach them and educate them and make them aware that this will always be part of your NBA life and it’s many times no reflection on the part of the individual — it’s just the normal drumbeat of an NBA season,” Brown said. “You’re not going to find many people that stay with one team their whole career.”

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, Okafor is averaging 11.6 points and 4.8 rebounds in 23.2 minutes during 37 games (22 starts) this season after contributing 17.5 points and 7 boards in 30 minutes during 53 games (48 starts) as a rookie.

I’M NOT DEFENSIVE — HINKIE EXECUTED HIS VISION IN THE DRAFT

content_img

By Art Beitchman, DOCBLOG

As the dust begins to settle on the 2014 NBA draft — and with Daily News columnist Ed Rendell still dreaming about Doug McDermott and his DN colleague Dick Jerardi pissingth SER Catalunya, Arteta was asked about almost leaving City – first to take the Arsenal job in 2018 and second about Newcastle’s interest over the summer. He said, “Yes, there have been some things, but the decision I have made is that I am very happ on Sam Hinkie’s long-term plan — it is obvious that these two hoops watchers don’t get it.

It’s very clear to anyone watching that Hinkie’s plan for the 76ers is to be a defensive-oriented-first team; and with Nerlens Noel and the addition of Joel Embiid the Sixers will have a front line force for the first time in decades.

The 76ers simply could not afford to pass up 19-year-old Kansas center Embiid, the 7-foot, 250-pounder who can move and defend with frightening skill. He had to be their pick at No. 3 overall. Of course his foot injury is a natural concern, but that werpool ace is often the subject of rough treatment from defenders, but will have the help of VAR in the Premier League this season. He told CNN: “I don’t like it … that’s my answer, always. I don’t like it. I love football how it is”It’s like that will heal in due time — that’s why they made the pick.

Then, at No. 10, the 76ers picked the pockets of the Magic, eventually getting PF Dario Saric from Croatia, who admits he’s not strong enough yet to play in the NBA now but in a couple of years the team will have a skilled big European player. Hinkie also got the Magic to cough up a valuable draft pick in 2015.

At No. 32 they snagged Clemson forward K. J. McDaniels, a sticky defender and hustler who had a very good college career, and should be inive at the club.Wilson signed from Liverpool on a season long loan deal near the end of the Premier League transfer window. The 22-year-old has yet to feature for the Cherries, but fans are excited about what he can offer the team in the coming months Orlando next week for the summer league the 76ers will be participating in with the rest of the rookie class.

Jerami Grant, another SF from Syracuse was picked at 39; Jordan McRae, a shooting guard from Tennessee who popped almost 19 a game will get a good look in the summer leagues and camps going forward. Point guard Pierre Jackson was re-acquired from the Pelicans; he too should get a chance to be a back-up PG to MCW in the fall.

Overall, I believe the 76ers did very well in the draft, remember there are no quick fixes in an extremely competitive league, the team isn’t building to just make the playoffs and get bounced in the first round. They are attempting to build a championship contender, one piece at a time.

In reality it can’t be done any other way, and the picks they made last week will help them attain that goal.

SIXERS BRINGING THE HEAT IN HOME OPENER ON NOV. 1

By Lewis Gould

It is not surprising that no Sixers games made the list of “Must Watch” match-ups in the 2014-15 season.

And Anthony Gargano and Rob Ellis won’t be going game-by-game to figure out how many wins the Sixers will total, as they do when the NFL schedule is released and everyone wants to see where the Eagles fit into the league’s pecking order.

But the Sixers announced their schedule for the 2014-15 regular season last night, and there are some highlights for hoopheads to mark:

After opening at Indiana on Oct. 29, the home opener is against the four-time defending Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat on Saturday, Nov. 1.  The Sixers will also host the Heat in the regular season finale on Wednesday, Apr. 15.

In addition to the games against Miami, here are some other highlights from the Sixers 2014-15 home schedule:

The next portion of the schedule will see the Sixers play 16 of 26 games on the road from Dec. 21 through Feb. 6, including a season-long seven-game road trip from Dec. 21 through Jan. 3.

Following that stretch, the Sixers will play 12 of their next 18 games at home from Feb. 7 through Mar. 20, including a season-high five straight from Mar. 6 through Mar. 14.  The Sixers have two sets of back-to-back home games during this span (Mar. 6-7 vs. Utah and Atlanta and Mar. 13-14 vs. Sacramento and Brooklyn).

Eight of the Sixers final 13 games from Mar. 22 through Apr. 15 are on the road.

The Sixers have 21 sets of back-to-backs this season, with just six occurring before January.  However, the Sixers will play seven sets of back-to-back games from Jan. 9 through Feb. 7 and will play a total of 18 games over that 30-day span.  The Sixers have just three sets of back-to-back games over the final 31 days of the season.

Over the course of the schedule, the Sixers will face each NBA team at least once at home and once on the road, including Eastern Conference opponents twice at home and twice on the road except for the following: Charlotte (2 home, 1 road), Chicago (2 to sign Giroud on loan this January, says the Telegraph. Chelsea are not willing to let the Frenchman leave this month, unless they can find a replacement.Toon boss Steve Bruce is looking to sign Giroud for the rest of the season to bolster his attahome, 1 road), Cleveland (1 home, 2 road) and Orlando (1 home, 2 road),

The Sixers will have 10 days between games from Feb. 10 through Feb. 19 during this season’s All-Star break.

OLD FRIEND SAYS SO LONG TO PHILS GREAT JIM BUNNING, DEAD AT 85

content_img

Jim Bunning’s old Phillies manager Gene Mauch called him 200 pounds of pride.

He was proud that over an 11-season stretch, he never missed a start. “They wrote down my name and I went to the post,” Bunning said.

And he once struck out Ted Williams three times in one game!

Alas, even legends must eventually leave us.

Jim Bunning – Hall of Famer – Congressman – Senator – passed away Friday night.

The baseball player-turned-politician who was such a family man that he threw a perfect game on Father’s Day 1964 for the Phillies against the Mets with his childhood sweetheart and wife, Mary, in the stands.

He won 100 games in both leagues and was second only to Walter Johnson is strikeouts when he retired.

I was Legislative Director for Congressman Jim Bunning for his first six years in Congress. Linda and I worked on more campaigns than we can remember.

The Bunning family has been intertwined with ours for over 30 years. His irasr contract with Fiorentina. The former Bayern Munich midfielder joins as a free agent.“Hello Fiorentina,” wrote Ribery on social media.“A new chapter for me and my family is beginning. Blessed and happy to sign a new contre named Chelsea manager this week. The Mirror says his stunning return to Chelsea as their new manager is set to be completed within the next two days. The former Blues midfielder is the strong favourite to take over in the hotseat after Maurizio Sarriact at a great club in a cible spirit and unflinching determination to always do the right thing for his family and constituents, molded my character. It is a debt I have repaid by passing along his spirit to my children.

One of Bunning’s nine kids once asked me what it was like to work for their father. I laughed that the answer was simple.  So long as you gave 150 percent in your job, anticipated his every move, dove head-first for grounders, and were loyal to a fault, Jim Bunning was easy to work for.

Whether you were part of his Congressional staff or a utility outfielder on his ball team, Jim demanded only your best. And you gave it or incurred his over-the-glasses stare. Like a batter taking a pitcher’s part of the plate, everyone who worked for Jim knew the stare.

Bunning caught me impersonating him one time. I got the stare.

But our loyalty was a two-way street. In return, our lives became his concern. Bunning wanted success for us and our families. Emails and texts are flying around today between former staffers about how Jim sataway Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic. The Croatia international, linked with Manchester United and Tottenham, is ready to quit Barca in January after finding himself frozen out this season. And Sport says an unnamed Premier League club has already ma in the office and held someone’s hand as they struggled through some sort of personal trauma.

Over more than two decades in Washington, Jim and Mary Bunning became surrogate parents to a raft of twenty-something staffers a long way from home. They treated us like family. Each and every former staffer considers themselves the 10th Bunning kid. One put it well by saying it took working for someone else to understand how much the Bunnings truly loved us all.

The last time I saw Jim, he was frail from the effects of his first stroke. His speech was weak, but it didn’t dampen his enthusiasm for the visit. We talked baseball, politics, and, of course, family. Little tidbits about my wife and our kids made him smile.

Jim Bunning once told me that great pitchers never give up the ball. They make the manager take it from them. Yesterday, God called Jim Bunning home, taking the ball from him and commending him on a life well played.

Ender Inciarte and Adonis Garcia started the ninth with consecutive singles off closer Jeanmar Gomez (3-3). Freeman then lined a double to left to put the Braves up 5-4. Kemp followed with an RBI single past a drawn-in infield. Kemp’s three-run homer in the fifth tied it at 4.

Nick Markakis added an RBI double in the ninth and Tyler Flowers had a sacrifice fly.

“They’re hitting, man,” Braves interim manager Brian Snitker said. “Matt, he hit the homer, but that add-on run was just a good piece of hitting. He’s just an RBI guy. Some guys have a knack for driving runs in. He and Freddie drive runs in. They love those situations.”

The Braves acquired Kemp from San Diego on July 30. He has four of his 27 homers and 23 of his 92 RBI in 30 games for Atlanta.

“The offense has been showing up the last week or so. Actually, since Matty got here,” Freeman said.

The Braves have scored the second-most runs in the majors (157) since Kemp’s first game on Aug. 2.

“We’ve got some dangerous hitters in this lineup, guys that have been there and done that,” Kemp said. “I really feel the first two guys are setting the table for us offensively. Then me, Freddie and (Nick) Markakis and the rest of us, we’re just feeding off of that.”

The Braves started their rally in the fifth when Gordon Beckham led off with a double and scored on Inciarte’s infield single.

With two on and two outs, Kemp drove a 1-2 hanging curve to the seats in left-center. A frustrated Hellickson crouched behind the mound and scratched his head while Kemp circled the bases.

“I’d like to have that one back,” Hellickson said. “Just a curveball that stayed in the zone too long. I get ahead 0-2 on Kemp and I couldn’t put him away. I can’t make a mistake up in the zone like that with a 4-1 lead.”

ISH-LESS SIXERS TIP NETS 103-98 — OKAFOR: 22 POINTS, 17 BOARDS!

content_img

No Ish? No problem!

T. J. McConnell, filling in for the injured starting point guard Ish Smith, tied a career high with 17 points to help the Sixers  beat the Nets, 103-98 last night at the Wells.

McConnell, a rookie, was a big reason that the 76ers were able to earn an eighth win while ending a four-game loe snapped up Argentine striker Jonathan Calleri. The 26 year-old arrivest-half of the season and ultimately is was they whom “threw me out”.The Spaniard was sacked less than halfway through his second season in November after a string of poor results and performances.Though he admits the Gunners were not playing well uns on-loan from Uruguay’s Deportivo Maldonado.Calleri is a former West Ham and Alaves loanee. He’s been with Deportivo Maldonado since 2016.#CalleriPericoBenvingut!¡Bienvenido!Welcsing streak.

“He was inspirational,” Sixers coach Brett Brown said.

McConnell credited Smith, who injured his ankle after scoring 22 points in a 106-94 loss at Washington on Friday night.

“I was just trying to do my best impression of him tonight,” McConnell said.

Although they improved to just 8-43, the 76ers have improved since late they acquired Smith from New Orleans in late December. They have gone 6-13 with him in the lineup.

“From the moment he got here, I think our team played for the better,” McConnell said. “Even while Ish was on the bench, he was showing leadership.”

Thaddeus Young scored all of 22 his points after halftime for the Nets, who were trying to win a second consecutive game for the first time since Dec. 10. Young added 10 rebounds, and Brook Lopez had 17 points.

The Nets trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and were down by 69-64 entering the fourth quarter. Markel Brown’s third 3-pointer of the game gave the Nets their biggest lead, at 86-81, with 6 minutes 59 seconds remaining. But the 76ers scored 8 of the next 10 points and took back the lead on Hollis Thompson’s 3-pointer from the left wing, which made it 89-88 with 4:44 left. The Nets moved ahead again, bld United on Sunday.Sergio Aguero scored the opener following some interference in build-up play from referee Chris Kavanagh. And Guardiola says his team benefitted from VAR’s inadequacies.”I said many times I have a huge list for VAR. Every weekend iut Robert Covington drained a 3-pointer with 1:16 to play, putting the 76ers up, 97-96.

Both teams missed field goals on ensuing possessions before McConnell’s steal led to Noel’s dunk with 21.3 seconds remaining. That made it 99-96, enough for Philadelphia to earn its seventh win in the last 20 games.

The Nets dropped to 4-19 on the road.

“When you get consistent how you play, then we’ll start turning these games into wins,” said Tony Brown, the Nets’ interim coach. “I commend them for getting back in it, but obviously there’s still a lot of work we have to do.”

Markel Brown, who entered averaging just 2.5 points per game, was perfect from the field while setting a season high with 15 points for the Nets. Brown made all five of his shots, including three 3-pointers.

“He was very decisive,” Tony Brown said. “It was good to see that. He saw shots and took them, and the ball was falling for him.”

Markel Brown, known as a defensive specialist, said he had been working hard on his jump shot.

“I’m trying to elevate my game to not be one-dimensional,” he said.

The Nets set a season high for points in Friday’s 128-119 home victory over the Kings, but on Saturday, they mustered just 12 points while sleepwalking through the first quarter. They turned the ball over 11 times and missed 12 of 17 shots in the quarter.

“That hurt us, and that triggered down through the whole game,” said Joe Johnson, who finished with 9 points. “We never got in sync.”

The loss ended the Nets’ three-game road winning streak against the 76ers. The Nets’ last consecutive victories were Dec. 8 and Dec. 10, when they defeated the Rockets and the 76ers.
